Free your mind
New Zealand produces fantastic art but there has always been a problem for artists (and the wider arts industry) to be able sustain full-time careers or simply get paid for what their art is worth. This situation will not change unless artists change the way that they go about selling themselves. The “if-you-build-it-people-will-come” attitude does not work, you have to sell yourself. The attitude that the government should fund your artistic endeavours will not work either because you will never get enough and you will spend most of your time trying to get funds with no guarantee. That time would be better spent. So how does an artist develop a sustainable career? First of all you have to start thinking that you will be successful and then you have make your behaviour and actions match that thinking. You will also need to learn and develop the necessary skills to achieve success. You must be open to new ideas and new behaviours that are crucial for success. The purpose of this website is to help you help yourself. In particular, in this section we will demystify business enterprise and give you a basic framework so that you can start working on a plan for success. Before moving on you should ask yourself questions like these: 1. Is recognition through selling work important to me? 2. Do I value critical attention or am I in art to meet only my own needs? 3. Do I need an audience? 4. Would I like my art to sustain me financially? 5. Finally, what am I prepared to do achieve my goals?
